“Háy János wrote this play partly for puppets. I have tried almost every genre from opera to operetta, from contemporary to classical, but I have never worked with puppets yet. It was a real challenge to communicate with adolescents, to whom this is something childish, through puppets. On the other hand, it is important to me to put contemporary authors’ play on stage regularly.” (Bagossy László)

Following his humanistic studies Bagossy László graduated as a theatre director from the University of Theatre and Film in 1995. Since then he has been working as a freelance director in Hungarian, German and Austrian theatres and has been awarded several times; lately he won the yearly Hungarian theatre festival called POSZT with Kasimir and Karoline as best performance and best direction. His direction are mostly a combination of a pure but elaborated, restrained but still strong forms of expression and rich, new intellectual contents.

Kolibri Children and Youth Theatre was started as an alternative puppet theatre in Budapest in 1992, when the State Puppet Theatre was divided in two. The theatre has three venues all of which have a different profile: the Színház (theatre) the Fészek (nest) and the Pince (cellar) offer performances to children and youngsters at different ages. Most of the repertory addresses children between 5 and 12, but they play more and more shows for teenagers and they are the only theatre in Hungary that has shows for infants. Although most of the actors are puppeteers, the company has not based its performances only on puppets right from the beginning, and today Kolibri Theatre has shows in many genres: puppet theatre, regular theatre, interactive plays or fairy musicals as well.

Viaduct is a mixture of regular and puppet theatre. The story is set in Veszprém, a city of the Hungarian countryside, which is famous for a beautiful viaduct that is also a scene of many suicides. Háy János wrote his play after a real event, however, some of its pieces could be found in his scripts and short stories earlier. In the story a choir of angels comes to the Earth and recalls the events, dialogues, dreams and memories that show why the tragedy happened. Adults are played by actors and children by puppets, the dominance of which is stronger in the show than in Háy János’s concept. The director hopes that this distant perspective helps adolescents to find it easier to face their problems.

Háy János was born in 1960 and he has been publishing since his humanistic studies: first poems in 1989 then novels and recently plays. In the beginning the subject of his works was determined by his experiences of his rural origin: most of them focused on the countryman’s problems and conflicts in the city. Besides writing he has published many paintings and drawings as well, and he also illustrates his own books. He succeeded as a fiction writer with his novel Dzsigerdilen, which is set in the Turkish age of Hungary. As a playwright his biggest successes are the plays Gézagyerek (The Stonewatcher) and Herner Ferike faterja (Ferike Herner’s Dad): both of them were translated to many languages and are played in foreign countries as well.
